About Aurum
Aurum designer-jewellers design and make unique pieces of jewellery to individual customer requirements.
Aurum designer-jewellers was established in 1985 by Sussex-based jewellery designer and goldsmith Andrew Leggett, to showcase his unique handmade jewellery.
Before starting Aurum, Andrew had spent ten years working in top jewellery workshops in London.
Andrew had entered the jewellery trade straight from school, when a summer holiday job at a local jewellery manufacturer caused him to rethink his career plans.
In 1975 he began training as a diamond-mounter with iconic British jewellery designer John Donald, and went on to work with top West End designer Geoffrey Turk.
After 10 years of commuting to London, Andrew set up Aurum in his home town of Worthing.
Bespoke jewellery has always been the main focus of the business.
Our jewellery is assayed and hallmarked at the London Assay Office.
A lifetime in spent in jewellery
This is Andrew back in 1980, in the West-End workshop of Geoffrey Turk.
Here he made one-off contemporary jewellery for Geoffrey's collection, alongside classic jewellery for many top Bond-Street jewellers.
It was another five years before he set up Aurum. Even after forty-eight years at the bench, he still loves designing and making jewellery.

Unlike the majority of jewellery shops, Aurum has no sales staff.
If you look in through our shop window, and don’t see anyone, it doesn’t mean we are closed!
We are all working jewellers, so unless there is a customer in the shop, we are usually upstairs in the workshop, busily designing and making jewellery!
Just ring the doorbell and someone will come down to let you in. - Usually, it will be the goldsmith who has the cleanest hands at the time!

Aurum is mainly known for bespoke engagement rings and wedding rings, which make up a large proportion of our work. We also make many eternity rings for clients who might be celebrating a special wedding anniversary, or perhaps the birth of a child.
However, you don't need to have a reason to commission a piece of jewellery - you might just feel like treating yourself!

How do you make a yellow gold ring with a twisted platinum centre? These photos of a recent commission show the process. The ring is actually four rings joined together! The centre ring is made by twisting two platinum wires together. This is flanked by a narrow gold ring on each side. If your engagement ring does not sit well with a straight wedding band, you could consider going for a fitted wedding ring. We made this ring recently to sit alongside our customer's vintage diamond solitaire. Because the two rings interlock, they hold one another in place, so they are always perfectly aligned. This means the nine diamonds in the wedding ring stay on top and don't end up under the finger. Also, because movement between the rings is minimal, friction and the wear it causes is greatly reduced. The emerald was a bit scratched and had lost its shine, and the setting was worn-out. A recent remodelling job. Our customer brought us a collection of old rings in 18ct white gold that she never wore, asking us to combine them into one ring that she could wear all the time. We came up with this design between us, based on a wedding ring in our stock, which has two lines cut around it, dotted with randomly-spaced diamonds, and left un-plated. The difference with this one is that it has the square in the middle, interrupting the two grooves, which meant they could not be cut using a lathe. - They had to be engraved by hand! We often have to make a wedding ring to fit with a particular engagement ring, but very occasionally, it's the other way around. This pair of rings, which came back recently to be resized, are an example. We made the wedding ring back in 1993. It features a row of five princess-cut diamonds on a crossover-effect band. Then, in 1999, when we were asked to design an engagement ring to sit alongside it, we made the four-stone diamond cluster on an asymmetric band. This remodelling job that we did a while ago used the customer's platinum wedding ring to make a name pendant. First, we melted the ring and rolled it to form a little sheet of the appropriate size. We then glued the design, which we had already drawn, on top of the platinum. Then, we cut out the shape using a jeweller's piercing saw. An important part of creating a bespoke fitted wedding ring is matching the profile (or cross-section) of the engagement ring. In this example, the customer's engagement ring has a "knife-edge" band, so we made the wedding ring a knife-edge too.
